GOP Aims to Crack Down on Web Gambling

WASHINGTON (AP)
Congressional Republicans attached a measure cracking down on Internet gambling to a bill aimed at enhancing port security that passed Saturday."

Congress has grappled with this issue for 10 years, and during that time we've watched this shadow industry explode," Frist said in a statement Friday. "For me as majority leader, the bottom line is simple: Internet gambling is illegal."
The fact that this was attached to a port security bill that supposedly enhances homeland security is the first bit of nonsense.

Now I do not gamble, I think it is a stupid way to spend money. I do not want gambling houses or casinos in my town, they bring too much riff-raff with them. But tell me, why is online gambling illegal? Just who does it hurt, beyond the folks that waste their money? What business does the Federal Government have telling folks how to spend their money? Are we all children in need of parental guidance?

I think the words "shadow industry" answers all of these questions. The government cannot regulate or TAX this industry - so it is illegal. The fact that our system of government allows our elected knuckle-heads to attach unrelated items to bills is shameful and deceitful. The fact that our government believes it alone knows what is best for us and that it has the right to tax and regulate every aspect of our lives is abhorrent.

Update: Seems Britian sees no threat to homeland security in Internet Gambling
